Engine Knocking
A knock in a diesel is serious and we treat it that way. We figure out whether it is a top end knock from an injector or a lifter, or a bottom end knock from a bearing or a piston. An injector that is overfueling can knock and wash the cylinder, while a rod bearing knock means the engine is close to failure. We isolate the cylinder with a cutout test and check the oil for metal. We tell you straight what the knock means and what it takes to fix it.
White Smoke from the Exhaust
White smoke usually means unburned fuel or coolant in the cylinder. We check the injectors for overfueling, the injector cups for coolant leaks, and the head gasket for a breach. A truck blowing white smoke with a sweet smell is burning coolant, and that points at the head gasket or the cups. We pressure test the cooling system and inspect the cylinders to find the source of the smoke and stop the damage.
Overheating
An overheating diesel will hurt itself fast. We check the coolant level, the thermostat, the water pump, the fan clutch, and the radiator for restriction. A water pump with a bad impeller or a stuck thermostat will overheat the engine, and a fan clutch that will not engage does the same. When the oil level rises and smells like diesel, fuel is getting into the oil. That is usually a bad injector or a leaking injector cup, and it washes the oil off the cylinder liners and ruins the bearings.
